Authorities tour construction site of Portuaria Corral dome in Valdivia: it will be the largest in the Americas
"We wanted to invite local authorities to this stage of the project because we are at a key moment: the deployment of the structural fabrics and the installation of the air and electrical systems that will allow the structure to be inflated over the coming weeks," explained Sprenger. The dome represents an investment of US$3.5 million and an estimated impact of up to US$10 million annually on the regional gross domestic product.
The construction of the new hybrid tug Don Víctor for Portuaria Corral reached 45% completion, according to the company.
Presidential delegate Jorge Alvial, head of the regional government's Development and Industry Division Eugenio Ortega, and Valdivia mayor Carla Amtmann, together with Portuaria Corral general manager Diego Sprenger, toured the Domo project construction site in the Miraflores neighborhood of the regional capital. The project will become the largest air-supported geodesic dome in the Americas.
"It is very significant for us to see how an initiative of this magnitude is progressing toward its final stage. It is an important project that marks the end of our term with a clear sign of development for Valdivia and the region," Alvial said.
Ortega, meanwhile, appreciated the invitation and pointed out that, "we are talking about an investment that will have a direct impact on regional GDP and strengthen the competitiveness of the territory, while also incorporating standards that engage with the community and the environment."
Finally, Mayor Amtmann stated that, "atthe Municipality of Valdivia, we are concerned about employment and investment in our city, as well as ensuring that the various projects demonstrate that it is possible to advance economic development while caring for the quality of life of our residents. That is why we value the effort and investment made by Portuaria Corral in improving its infrastructure, always seeking to improve and raise its standards as a company. That balance is key to the Valdivia we want to build."
The dome's main function will be to cover the wood chip storage pile, protecting it from rain, improving the quality of the material, and reducing dust dispersion and noise from operations. The final design was selected through a participatory process with the community, seeking to ensure that the infrastructure blends harmoniously with the urban and riverine environment.
The structure will cover approximately 20,000 square meters and reach a maximum height of 30 meters. Its surface area is comparable to almost three professional soccer fields. Considering the curvature of the design, between 22,000 and 25,000 square meters of specialized membrane will be used for its total cladding, an extension that, if laid out in a straight line in a two-meter-wide strip, would exceed eleven kilometers, a distance similar to the journey between Valdivia and Niebla approximately.
